Meta May Soon Block News on Facebook and Instagram

Canadians may soon no longer be able to access news through Facebook or Instagram, if a new bill passes.

The Online News Act, being considered in the Canadian legislature, would place Meta in an untenable position, according to Meta spokesperson Lisa Laventure.

The bill (known as Bill C-18) would require digital titans like Meta and Google to negotiate deals which would compensate Canadian media companies for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.

Large Canadian media companies and the Liberal government support the bill, saying it would level the playing field for news outlets that compete with tech firms for advert dollars.

In a statement, Laventure wrote, “A legislative framework that compels us to pay for links or content that we do not post, and which are not the reason the vast majority of people use our platforms, is neither sustainable nor workable.”

Meta is reportedly testing limited news access to certain Canadian accounts, with Laventure explaining, “The bill is a moving target, with key questions left unanswered. We don’t know if we will be able to continue to link to news as we do today, so we are testing potential changes to the way we currently freely link to news under that framework.”
