Liar, Liar: Influencer Mikayla Nogueira Accused of Faking Thick Massachusetts Accent

Makeup influencer Mikayla Nogueira faces increasing public scrutiny and criticism after followers unearthed a clip of her speaking without her trademark “redneck accent.”

Nogueira’s accent appears to be a raspy drawl, and has long been one of her most identifiable traits to her over 14.6 million followers.

However, online users found a video of Nogueira during her time at Rhode Island’s Bryant College, speaking in what some are calling her “customer service voice.”

In a neutral accent that sounds more East Coast than redneck, Nogueira says in the video, “I actually work here at the information center, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing me around.”

The video has received over 11 million views, and some are saying it’s proof that she’s untrustworthy. Well, more proof. Nogueira was called out earlier this year for possibly using fake eyelashes to promote a mascara on Twitter, and she was accused of using a skin-smoothing filter during a paid review of a YSL foundation. Notably, beauty influencer Jeffree Star came for Mikayla, much to her critics’ delight.

The newest video also opened a dialogue around the fact that those with thick accents are often expected to tone down their natural drawls in professional settings, with Nogueira herself saying in a livestream earlier this month that she was mocked for her voice her “entire life.” She said, “It’s not a fucking Boston accent, I’ve already said that. It’s a fucking redneck accent from where I’m from.”
