Twitter Faces a Fine in Germany That’s More than the Company’s Net Worth

Twitter is currently facing more than 600 cases regarding hate speech on the platform that are now before German courts.

The cases violate NetzDG, known colloquially as the country’s “hate speech takedown law.”

The law allows for a fine of up to 50 million euros per case.

If all of the cases result in a fine, that could total around $33B for Twitter to pay.

But Twitter, bought by Musk for $44B in 2022, is only worth about $20B now.

If it all goes awry for Twitter, the company could go bankrupt. But even if it doesn’t end in the worst-case scenario for Musk, they could still end up paying tens of millions of dollars in fines.
