‘Just Stop Oil’ Protesters Disrupt Wimbledon Play

During Wimbledon, play on Court 18 was interrupted twice by protesters from the environmental group Just Stop Oil. These individuals threw orange-colored confetti and jigsaw pieces onto the court, causing a temporary match halt. The All England Club has confirmed that the protesters were subsequently arrested.

The first incident occurred during the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Sho Shimabukuro. Shortly after, a third protester targeted Katie Boulter’s match against Daria Saville. Just Stop Oil, known for advocating the cessation of new oil, gas, and coal projects, has previously targeted various sporting events, including an Ashes Test.

The All England Club released a statement after the initial disruption, stating that two individuals had been arrested for aggravated trespass and criminal damage. The protesters had thrown confetti and jigsaw pieces from a Wimbledon ‘Centre Court View’ jigsaw puzzle box onto the grass.

Following the interruptions, a Wimbledon shop employee informed BBC Sport that jigsaws were temporarily withdrawn from sale. Despite increased security measures and appeals for consideration, Wimbledon has become the latest target of climate change protests, with its pristine green surface briefly transformed into an orange hue.

Grigor Dimitrov, who went on to win his match, acknowledged that the interruption was unpleasant but praised the swift response from staff and the fortunate timing of a subsequent rain delay that allowed players to regroup.
