Is Instagram Over? The Aging App is Losing to Younger Competitors

Instagram was at its heyday just a few years ago.

Everyone who was anyone had an Instagram account, posted regularly, and used it as a way to connect with peers and celebrities.

But now, Instagram could be on the way out. A recent Piper Sandler survey found that out of 14,500 teenagers surveyed across 47 states, only 20% listed Instagram as their favorite social media platform. TikTok was first, followed by Snapchat.

Many users who aren’t influencers find their use of the site waning to a slow trickle.

Instagram has tried to keep up with its peers, imitating some of TikTok’s most successful features. But they can’t do TikTok better than TikTok can, and users are quickly gravitating towards the media-rich experience that is TikTok.

The algorithm has also made it difficult for users to see the content they want to see, which is exactly the opposite of how things work on TikTok.

The Wall Street Journal recently obtained internal documents that showed that Instagram users spent 17.6 million hours a day watching Reels (Instagram’s attempt at TikTok vids), compared to the whopping 197.8 million hours people spend watching TikTok videos every day.

Instagram may not be dead yet, but it will have to do better than imitating competitors to keep users from bailing.
