Iran Couple Sentenced to Over 10 Years in Prison for Posting Dance Vid Online

Reports from Iran say that a young couple have been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after they posted a video of themselves dancing in front of a major Tehran landmark.

According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Iranian security forces “violently” arrested 21-year-old Astiyazh Haghighi and fiancé Amir Ahmadi (22) on November 1, 2022, shortly after they uploaded the video to Instagram.

In the background of the pair dancing, the Azadi (Freedom) Monument can be seen.

HRANA says that the court in Tehran handed down sentences of 10 years and six months after they were convicted on charges of “encouraging corruption and public prostitution” and “gathering with the intention of disrupting national security.”

Iran state news agency Mizan said they were not arrested for dancing, but for online activities including “encouraging people to riot against the country and subversion.”
