DeSantis Gave Martha’s Vineyard Migrants a Brochure Promising the World – and It Was All a Lie

When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis flew two planes full of migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, he did so with a lie.

Migrants were given brochures that promised cash, job placements, and more – but there were no such benefits to be had, making it a disturbing lie.

Some individuals even say they were promised work permits in Boston by a woman identified as “Perla,” but of course – that was a lie, as well.

A group known as Lawyers for Civil Rights is demanding a criminal investigation into the actions of DeSantis, writing, “Our clients were induced to board airplanes and cross state lines under false pretenses. Individuals, working in concert with the Florida Governor, made numerous false promises to our clients, including of work opportunities, schooling for their children, and immigration assistance, in order to induce them to travel.”

While mid-flight, people were told that they, in fact, weren’t headed for Boston, and, the group writes, once their clients were induced to travel, “these false pretenses disappeared, leaving our clients to learn that the offers of assistance had all been a ruse to exploit them for political purposes.” They added, “This type of conspiracy to deprive our clients of their liberty and civil rights and interfere with federal immigration proceedings must be thoroughly investigated for violations of criminal laws.”

DeSantis maintains that they signed a waiver (most of them can’t read English) and were given a map of Massachusetts, so they went voluntarily. Legal experts disagree with the Florida governor’s assertion, but whether or not a criminal investigation will follow remains to be seen.
