Bill Advances in France That Would Require Influencers to Disclose if They’re Using a Filter

The days of fake faces in France may soon be over. Or at least, a little easier to spot.

The lower chamber of the French parliament, the National Assembly, passed a widely well-received bill that aims to introduce new requirements for social media influencers.

Deputy from the green party Aurélien Taché first submitted the bill, saying that influencers promote scams because there are no negative consequences to doing so.

That bill was joined by others which would help to define what an influencer is for the purpose of holding them to disclosure standards. For the purposes of these bills, a paid influencer is someone who leverages their reputation to share content that promotes a product or a service in exchange for money or a benefit-in-kind. Influencers who meet these standards would be required to comply with new regulations.

One of the biggest new rules is that influencers using a beauty filter would have to disclose that they’re using one – and the information would have to be visible at all times during their video or photo. The bills would also ban influencers from promoting cosmetic surgery, financial products and services (including cryptocurrencies) and counterfeit products. And if influencers accept a paid promotion, they will have to state clearly that it’s a paid promotion.

Breaking these rules will come with hefty fines.

The bill has passed the lower chamber and will now move to preliminary vote in the Senate. It’s likely the bill will pass in a few weeks. All the 49 deputies who were present at the National Assembly voted in favor of the bill.
