US Navy Engineer, Wife, Jailed for Conspiring to Sell Classified Info to Foreign Country

A United States Navy nuclear engineer and his wife have each been sentenced to around twenty years in prison for conspiring to sell classified info.

The information they were trying to sell is related to the design of nuclear-powered warships and their customers: a foreign country.

They were seeking thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency for the classified documents. The pair coordinated drop-offs of encrypted SD cards containing classified info about nuclear subs, specifically Virginia-class vessels, for who they thought were members of a foreign government.

The Justice Department announced last week that Jonathan Toebbe (44) of Annapolis, Maryland, will serve 19 years in prison.

His wife, Diana Toebbe (46), will serve 21 years.

The pair pled guilty in February to conspiracy, hoping that a federal judge in West Virginia would sign off on proposed plea agreements for lesser sentences.

But Judge Gina Groh rejected the agreements, saying it wasn’t in the country’s best interest to accept them. The deals would have seen Jonathan serve 12-18 years in prison, with his wife only serving 3.
