BREAKING RECAP

The Most Memorable Moments from Biden’s State of the Union

Last night, President Joe Biden stood before Congress and the world to deliver the annual State of the Union address.

With the economy on wobbly feet and the world starting to see hope of recovery from the COVID pandemic, it was a chance for a monumental speech even as political tensions in Washington reach a fever pitch.

What Biden delivered was good. 72% of Americans who watched approved of Biden’s speech, according to a CNN poll. 34% of people surveyed thought it was very good.

The numbers are similar to what Biden pulled for his 2022 SOTU speech.

But there were a few key moments that people should know about from last night’s speech, and here are the top 5:

  1. Marjorie Taylor Greene called Biden a “liar” during his speech, leading jeers and boos while covered in (faux?) fur from her seat.
  2. Biden boxed Republicans into a corner on Medicare and Social Security. Biden said that Republicans want a system that “sunsets” (or ends) Social Security and Medicare every few years unless they choose to renew it. Republicans erupted in boos, to which the President responded, “So folks, as we all apparently agree, Social Security and Medicare is off the books now, right? We got unanimity.”
  3. The parents of murdered Black man Tyre Nichols received a bipartisan standing ovation. Biden, who has himself lost children, challenged people to imagine losing a child at the hands of the law. He added, “Here’s what Tyre’s mother shared with me when I spoke to her. When I asked her how she finds the courage to carry on and speak out. With the faith in God she said her son was a beautiful soul, and something good will come from this. Imagine how much courage and character that takes. It’s up to us. To all of us. We all want the same thing. Neighborhoods free of violence. Law enforcement who earns the community’s trust. Just as every cop when they pin on that badge in the morning has a right to be able to go home at night, so does everybody else out there. Our children have a right to go home safely.”
  4. Progressives turned up for Biden: The progressive arm of the Democrat party is often at odds with Biden and his administration over their moderate/centrist policies. But last night, progressives turned up for the President, showing a party in unity and accord, a stark contrast to Republicans who still remain shaken and disunified after the disastrous Speaker vote in January.
  5. Mitt Romney slams George Santos: Senator Mitt Romney told controversial NY GOP Rep George Santos that he doesn’t belong here. Santos, who has lied about everything from the color of the sky to every facet of his personal and private life it would seem, is under an ethics investigation – and Romney doesn’t believe he belongs among the country’s most august.
