Texas Republicans Are Putting 10 Commandments in Every Classroom

Republicans in the Texas Senate passed a bill that would require teachers to put the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom.

Experts blasted the bill as a blatant attack on constitutional standards and religious freedoms and protections.

Senate Bill 1515 requires all public elementary or secondary schools in Texas to display “in a conspicuous place in each classroom of the school” a copy of the Ten Commandments.

The author of the bill, Senator Phil King (R), justified its passage by falsely claiming that these principles were espoused by the nation’s founding fathers.

The bill will now advance to the House of Representatives in Texas, although it’s unclear if Republican Governor Greg Abbott will sign it if it makes it to his desk.

Even though the Ten Commandments are part of Judeo-Christian ideology, not all Christians in Texas are in favor of the bill. John Litzler, general counsel for the Texas Baptists Christian Life Commission, said that the Ten Commandments contain themes parents may not want their young children exposed to, including adultery and “coveting” spouses.

Litzler explained, “I should have the right to introduce my daughter to the concepts of adultery and coveting one’s spouse. It shouldn’t be one of the first things she learns to read in her kindergarten classroom.”
