Tesla Driver Charged with Attempted Murder After Intentionally Driving Family Off a Cliff

A 41-year-old Tesla driver was charged with attempted murder and child abuse this week after investigators found that he drove his car off a cliff with his wife and two children inside on purpose.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Dharmesh Arvind Patel deliberately veered his car over a cliff in San Mateo County along State Route 1 on Monday morning.

Patel was driving his wife, their 4-year-old daughter, and their 9-year-old son. They all survived the crash, with the children suffering minor to moderate injuries. Patel and his wife sustained moderate to critical injuries.

Investigators say they’re not sure what driving mode Patel’s Tesla was in when the crash occurred, but they do not believe it played a role in the incident.

Coastside Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brian Pottenger said, “We did have one witness state the vehicle did veer off the road to the right-hand side, went up into the dirt area, and then proceeded to go off the cliff.”

Once Patel is released from the hospital, he will be taken to the San Mateo County Jail.
