Students Can Quote ChatGPT but Not Pass Its Work Off as Their Original Words

One international qualification body that provides testing to students has come up with a compromise for the rise in content being provided by ChatGPT and used by students around the world.

Students who take the International Baccalaureate (a qualification body that’s popular in Europe) test will be able to use ChatGPT as long as they quote it and don’t try to pass off the bot’s words as their own.

This determination from the group comes as multiple schools have already moved to ban the AI chat bot’s content from their tests and student work.

Matt Glanville, head of assessment principles and practice at the IB, compared the new technology to “familiar” challenges – such as students buying essays from the internet. The IB wants to work with students to help them use the AI ethically, and that trying to pass off the chat bot’s work as their own was an act of academic misconduct.

Glanville explained to the Times of London, “The clear line between using ChatGPT and providing original work is exactly the same as using ideas taken from other people or the internet. As with any quote or material adapted from another source, it must be credited in the body of the text and appropriately referenced in the bibliography.”
