Spotify Introduces AI-Powered Podcast Translation Feature Using Hosts’ Voices

Spotify unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered feature on Monday, enabling the translation of podcasts into various languages while preserving the original host’s voice.

This innovation leverages OpenAI’s voice generation technology, freshly unveiled on the same day. OpenAI’s technology is capable of crafting “realistic synthetic voices” from mere seconds of spoken content, as disclosed in their announcement. Spotify believes this advancement will enhance the podcast-listening experience, preserving the unique speech characteristics of podcasters.

The initial phase of this project involved collaborations with renowned podcasters such as Dax Shepard, Lex Fridman, Monica Padman, Steven Bartlett, and Bill Simmons, covering a selection of past and upcoming episodes. The translated content is available in Spanish, French, and German for free and premium Spotify users. More languages are anticipated to follow shortly, with Spanish taking the lead during the pilot phase.

While Spotify did not disclose specific pricing details for this new feature, they are actively exploring opportunities to expand this service to podcasters worldwide. Additionally, the company is already engaged in translating comedian Trevor Noah’s upcoming podcast, with plans for further enhancements in the future.
