Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout Injuries A Poetic End to Another Failed Angels Season

Whenever you think you’ve seen the worst of the Los Angeles Angels, they find new ways to add to the dismay.

Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani tore the UCL in his right elbow during his start on Wednesday. He will not pitch again this season and may not take the mound in 2024, depending on his next steps.

Ohtani will keep hitting for the remainder of the campaign, but it is a brutal blow for the 29-year-old ahead of free agency where many pundits expected he would receive a contract worth over $500 million.

To make matters even more depressing, fellow generational talent Mike Trout recently returned to the Angels’ lineup. After playing a single game, he is going back on the injured list and will be shut down for the next 10 days.

The Angels were supposed to contend for the postseason this year. Ohtani was enjoying one of the best single seasons baseball fans had ever seen. They acquired quality players at the deadline in an effort to make that final push.

Instead, a seven-game losing streak at the start of August plummeted them down the standings and made the playoffs all but unattainable. These injuries only make the failed season even more painful.

The end of the Ohtani era is going out with a whimper.
