Netflix is Confusing People with their New Password Sharing Restrictions

It’s the end of an era: password sharing is no longer allowed with Netflix.

But exactly how that’s being implemented and what it means for customers is a question many people can’t seem to find the answer to.

Rumors have confounded the company’s new policy rollout, with some saying online that Netflix’s password sharing requires users to connect devices to their account every month or the device would be blocked.

To try to dispel rumors and clear things up, Netflix updated their support page this week to explain how the policy will be implemented. However, they updated the site shortly after with new explanations.

The newest version of the policy doesn’t carry any mention of blocking devices that don’t connect monthly, but they clarified that when a device used outside of the household signs in (or is used repeatedly) Netflix will ask the user to verify that device by a link. They will need to input a generated code within 15 minutes.

They also mention that “device verification may be required periodically.” Those who travel or live between different homes “shouldn’t need” to verify their devices, but if they’re away for an extended period of time they may end up needing to.

As of now, Netflix identifies devices belonging to a single household by using IP addresses, device IDs and account activity from devices signed into the account.
