When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi discovered that a hammer-wielding maniac had violently assaulted her husband, she probably thought the most challenging part (surviving) was over.

And then came the torrent of anti-LGBTQ conspiracy theories that made her family’s recovery much more difficult.

Famous figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk have been pushing distasteful and inaccurate conspiracy theories about the attack on Paul Pelosi. Nancy herself has been too busy worrying about her husband to pay attention.

But now she’s responded. In an interview with Anderson Cooper, Pelosi said, “It’s really sad for the country that people of that high visibility would separate themselves from the facts and the truth in such a blatant way.”

Cooper then asked if there was a way for Americans to come together, hinting that the current state of unrest seems unsustainable. He said people on the sides seemed to be tired of the tension.

Pelosi challenged him “on all sides” assertion. “I wouldn’t say, ‘On all sides,’ because the fact is this is a one-sided assault on our democracy—an assault on the credibility and integrity of our elections and the rest. There has to be some adult supervision on the Republican side in order to say, ‘Enough.’”

Pelosi added, “We need a strong Republican party in our country. The GOP is a strong Republican party and [has] done great things for our country. They should take pride in that, instead of yielding to a cult, to a thug.”
