Man Sues Netflix for Wrongfully Using his Image to Portray ‘The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker’

A man from Kentucky has filed a lawsuit against Netflix for using his image in a true-crime documentary.

Taylor Hazlewood says his image was used in a murder story that he had no connection with.

The documentary, “The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker,” tells the tale of a viral star who turned into a killer, Kai McGillvary.

Hazlewood is seeking more than $1M in damages saying that the use of his image in the documentary portrays him in a “sinister and defamatory light.”

The doc tracks McGillvary’s journey from viral video star to convict, using screenshots from social media.

But one of those screenshots is actually Hazlewood.

McGillvary was a hitchhiker who used a hatchet to subdue Jett McBride, a man who gave him a ride and then attacked a utility worker.

McGillvary went viral when he spoke with media after the incident, giving a little speech about love and respect, then describing how he used the hatchet to intervene by saying, “smash, smash, smash!”

However, three months later he was wanted for the murder of a New Jersey lawyer, Joseph Galfy. McGillvary pled self-defense, but he was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019.
