Jack Dorsey Pledges $1 million a Year to Signal App

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey revealed this week that he would give a grant of $1 million yearly to the encrypted messaging app Signal.

It’s the first in a series of grants that Dorsey says will be part of his plans to support “open internet development.”

According to Dorsey’s post on Revue (a newsletter service owned by Twitter), Dorsey thinks that social media should not be “owned by a single company or group of companies.” He also believes social media must be “resilient to corporate and government influence.”

Dorsey has long lamented what happened to Twitter and seems to hope that his (former) pal Elon Musk will turn it into a bastion of free speech and free from outside influence.
