Israel Softens Government Overhaul Plans After Biden Calls Netanyahu

President Joe Biden got on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu over the weekend.

Netanyahu and the right-right government in Israel is currently in the midst of overhauling the Israeli judicial system, leading to protests across the country for two months.

But Biden was apparently able to convince Netanyahu to take his foot off the gas.

In the call, Biden told the Israeli PM to seek compromise and consensus on the country’s ongoing constitutional crisis. He called for checks and balances, and building broad agreement with the country’s leftist protestors. And Netanyahu listened.

Netanyahu announced a softening of the country’s plans for the overhaul, but it wasn’t enough – protesters were emboldened.

And even supporters weren’t happy, calling it “capitulation.”

Nonetheless, Biden’s call gave voice to the worries of Western allies concerned that the Israeli peoples’ rights were being eroded by the current legislation being considered, which concerns the number of Supreme Court justices and how they’re picked.

Before Biden’s call, the bill envisaged the panel including three cabinet ministers, two coalition lawmakers and two public figures chosen by the government, giving Netanyahu’s coalition a 7-4 vote majority.

In the new form, the bill envisages the panel being made up of three cabinet ministers, three coalition lawmakers, three judges and two opposition lawmakers. That could change things to a 6-5 majority for Netanyahu’s coalition, making their passage of agenda items less assured.

Opponents say nothing substantive has changed. And Netanyahu’s coalition is considering censuring the PM for giving in.
