Iranians Are Selling Their Organs on the Black Market to Pay Off Debt

Iranians are selling their organs, including testicles, livers, stem cells, bone marrow, and corneas, on the black market to pay off debt, according to messages reviewed by Insider.

While kidney sales are legal in Iran, the sale of other organs is banned. However, the Telegram messages appear to show a thriving online black market, with sellers citing debt and bankruptcy as the reasons for their decisions.

One man offered to sell his testicles, while another advertised his stem cells, bone marrow, and corneas. A 31-year-old listed his liver for sale for $21,301.78.

It is unclear how many of these sales or transplants have occurred, but the legality of these sales is questionable and may lead to organ trafficking charges. While some donors use the legal channels, sellers and donors often circumvent the process for potentially more profitable under-the-table deals, according to a 2022 study in the journal Transplant International.

Middlemen are also leading some Iranians to travel to Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey to sell other body parts.
