Iranian Girl in Coma After Tehran Metro Incident Amid Hijab Dispute

A 16-year-old Iranian girl named Armita Garawand has fallen into a coma and is currently hospitalized under tight security following an incident on the Tehran subway, according to a Kurdish-focused rights group called Hengaw. The group attributes the assault to the infamous morality police of the Islamic republic over Garawand’s hijab not being worn properly.

However, Iranian authorities vehemently deny these claims, asserting that the girl merely fainted due to low blood pressure and that there was no involvement of security forces.

The incident has rekindled concerns about social tensions in Iran, coming just over a year after the controversial death in custody of Mahsa Amini, who had been detained for allegedly violating strict dress regulations for women. Amini’s demise led to months of protests that unsettled Iran’s clerical leadership and only subsided in the face of a government crackdown, resulting in the arrest of thousands and the reported deaths of hundreds of activists.
