Green Lasers Shot Over Hawaii Didn’t Come from NASA

On January 28, a spooky green laser was seen shooting across the night sky over the islands of Hawaii.

The weird and ominous imagery was caught by a telescope perched on Hawaii’s highest mountain.

Initially, experts at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) said that they believed the laser came from an orbiting radar satellite called ICESat-2, owned by NASA.

However, after some analysis, it became clear that the weird laser did not come from NASA’s satellite. On February 6, NAOJ updated as to who they believe the laser came from.

“According to Dr. Martino, Anthony J., a NASA scientist working on ICESat-2 ATLAS, it is not by their instrument but by others. His colleagues, Dr. Alvaro Ivanoff et al., did a simulation of the trajectory of satellites that have a similar instrument and found a most likely candidate as the ACDL instrument by the Chinese Daqi-1/AEMS satellite.”

Daqi-1 was launched in April of last year and has a similar atmospheric monitoring job as ICESat-2. Daqi-1 uses five instruments to monitor global carbon levels and atmospheric pollution, including CO2 detecting Lidar. (Lidar is an acronym for Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging).

Lidar sends out lasers and measures the time it takes for the beams to bounce back, providing information on the composition of the atmosphere and ground below.
