Dodgers Continue To Renew Contract For Former Player So He Can Keep Receiving Health Insurance

Andrew Toles has not played in an MLB game since 2018, but that has not stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers from continuing to renew his contract.

For over five years now, the team keeps signing their former player for $0 so he can maintain access to the team’s health insurance.

Toles played for the Dodgers for parts of three seasons. Sadly, he was hospitalized in 2018 and diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

In 2020, the 30-year-old was found homeless, living behind the Key West International Airport. He was charged with misdemeanor trespassing and released under his father’s care.

According to his father, Toles is still in a state of active psychosis, but the Dodgers have made it infinitely easier for him to receive treatment.

People in the organization still continue to think about him.

“He fit in with us so fondly and was so adored. It’s sad to see what has transpired and knowing that a lot of it is out of his control,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “I would love to see him. I’d love to put my arms around him. I miss him. I really miss him.’’

The team hopes one day Toles will be at a point in his recovery where he can be their guest of honor at a game.

Classy stuff from the Dodgers organization.
