Disney World’s Deal with Union Raises Minimum Starting Wage to $18

On Thursday, Disney World reached a tentative deal with unions for service workers that would raise the starting minimum wage from $15 to $18 by the end of 2023.

The shift could change starting pay throughout central Florida as the impact ripples outward through the area’s tourism industry.

Next Wednesday, service workers who belong to the six unions that make up the Service Trades Counsil Union coalition will vote on the proposed contract. Earlier this year, the rejected a different offer that fell short of the $18/hr starting wage.

If the contract is approved, workers could see hourly wages rise between $5.50-$8.60 over the next five years.

Matt Hollis, head of the coalition of unions, said of the potential deal, “Securing an $18 minimum hourly rate this year, increasing the overall economic value of Disney’s original offer, and ensuring full back pay for every worker are the priorities union members were determined to fight for. Today, we have won that fight.”
