Chicago Blackhawks Win 2023 NHL Draft Lottery, Outrage Ensues

The hockey world is not pleased with the results of Monday’s NHL Draft Lottery, as the much-maligned Chicago Blackhawks wound up securing the first-overall pick.

The Blackhawks came into the event with the third-best odds at landing the top pick, but will now assuredly get to select superstar prospect Connor Bedard at the top of the draft.

Now, why is this such an upsetting result for hockey fans?

Partially because the Blackhawks have enjoyed very recent success. They won three Stanley Cups during their dynastic run in the 2010s while other lottery teams have wallowed for years in mediocrity.

The Blackhawks also blatantly tanked this season, delivering one of the worst rosters to ever grace the ice during the NHL’s salary cap era. It is unfortunate when such a flagrant attempt to lose is rewarded.

Finally, and most notably, is that the franchise covered up a rampant sexual assault scandal during the organization’s 2010s heyday. A team staffer sexually assaulted multiple players and the team covered it up for over a decade.

From a moral perspective, the Blackhawks are the least deserving franchise to receive any good fortune.

What an awful look for the NHL.
