CBC Media is ‘Pausing’ Their Account Usage on Twitter

CBC/Radio-Canada has announced that they will be pausing their use of Twitter.

This comes a day after the company’s main account was hit with the “government-funded media” tag by Elon Musk’s new policies.

CBC media relations director Leon Mar said in a statement on Monday, “Twitter can be a powerful tool for our journalists to communicate with Canadians, but it undermines the accuracy and professionalism of the work they do to allow our independence to be falsely described in this way. Consequently, we will be pausing our activity on our corporate Twitter account and all CBC and Radio-Canada news-related accounts.”

CBC’s announcement comes a week after NPR and PBS both announced they would be stepping away from Twitter for the same reason.

NPR receives funding from dues and fees paid by member stations, along with underwriting from corporate sponsors and annual grants from the publicly funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The majority of the network’s member stations are owned by non-profit organizations, including public school districts, colleges, and universities.

Federal funding provides around 15% of PBS’ annual budget.

CBC is publicly funded through a parliamentary appropriation voted on by all members of the Canadian parliament. Its editorial independence is protected by law.

Musk has not made a solid argument for why he’s slapping these labels on these networks other than to continue his anti-media crusade.
