California Sending Cash to Residents Next Month

It’s been six months since California Governor Gavin Newsom proposed relief checks to residents over high gas prices, and it’s finally coming true.

Starting next month, residents who have completed a 2020 California tax return and make less than $250K individually ($500K if filing jointly) will automatically receive payments October 2022 through January 2023.

The state will send out just under $10B in “inflation relief.”

It’s part of the 2022-2023 state budget surplus.

The breakdown looks like this:

  • For single filers who make less than $75K a year: $350 a month
  • For joint filers with a combined income of less than $150K a year: $350 each
  • Filers with dependents: an additional $350.
  • Single filers who make more than $75K annually, less than $125K and joint filers who make more than $150K but less than $250K: $250 each, plus $250 for dependents.
  • Anyone making more than $125K as a single filer or $250K as a joint filter, but less than $250K individually or $500K jointly will receive $200 plus $200 per dependent.

California is hoping that they will be able to offset some of the pain at the pump for residents after inflation has reached staggering levels, leaving residents (aka soon-to-be-voters) furious – and desperate for relief.
