California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking the war against spreading false information to another level.

He recently signed AB 2098 into law which will punish doctors and surgeons for “unprofessional conduct” if they advocate for the “benefits” of early treatment of COVID with off-label drugs.

In addition, it censures those who question vaccine safety and efficacy.

Critics say it puts “unconstitutional restrictions on free speech” by medical professionals, who are already under strict professional behavior guidance throughout their job.

If they violate AB 2098, doctors will be subject to disciplinary actions by the Medical Board of California and the Osteopathic Medical Board of California because they have violated the “approved COVID treatment consensus.”

Newsom said of the bill, “To be clear, this bill does not apply to any speech outside of discussions related to COVID-19 treatment within a direct physician-patient relationship.” So doctors can go home and say whatever they want, lodge professional protests, or give interviews – they can’t counsel patients against “approved treatment consensus.”

The founder of Californians for Good Governance, Laura Powell, wrote an opposition letter to the bill, stating, “There is no question that the bill is aimed at restricting speech based on its content. It would be presumptively invalid and only be upheld if the government could prove that the law is narrowly tailored to serve a compelling state interest.”

Appeals are expected.
