LAS VEGAS (AP) — A significant breakthrough has emerged in the long-standing mystery surrounding the fatal drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas 27 years ago. One of the last living witnesses to the incident has been charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon, bringing renewed hope for justice in the iconic hip-hop artist’s killing.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, who played a crucial role in the events leading to Shakur’s murder, was indicted by a Nevada grand jury, as announced by prosecutors in court on Friday. Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo disclosed that the grand jury had been actively investigating the case for several months. DiGiacomo further revealed that Davis, described as the “on-ground, on-site commander,” was the one who “ordered the death” of Shakur.

The charges against Davis were unveiled shortly after his arrest earlier that morning, while he was out for a walk near his residence, according to DiGiacomo.

Davis has long been a person of interest in the eyes of investigators and has openly admitted his involvement in interviews and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” He acknowledged his presence in the Cadillac from which the fatal gunfire was unleashed during the drive-by shooting in September 1996. At the time of his death, Shakur was just 25 years old.
