Alec Baldwin Faces Murder Charges, But How Did He Get Here?

By now, everyone knows that Alec Baldwin has been charged with manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Hutchins was killed on the set of “Rust” after a firearm discharged with a live round as she helped Baldwin and others practice a scene.

But it wasn’t just one bad choice that led to Baldwin’s murder charges – so here’s a quick summary of what led to the unimaginable:

  • October 6, 2021: “Rust” production begins in Santa Fe.
  • October 21, 2021: 42-year-old Hutchins was shot and killed while rehearsing a scene after Baldwin discharged his on-set Colt .45. Director Joel Souza was also injured. Before the weapon discharged, first assistant director David Halls had handed the gun to Baldwin while proclaiming “cold gun.” This is supposed to be a heads-up to the crew that a weapon is on set but does not contain live rounds. A subsequent investigation found that the rounds were, in fact, live.
  • November 17, 2021: script supervisor files a lawsuit against Baldwin, accusing him of “playing Russian roulette” by pointing the revolver at Hutchins even if he thought the rounds were not live.
  • December 2, 2021: Baldwin speaks in an interview for the first time and says he has “no idea” how the live rounds made it into his weapon.
  • January 12, 2022: Set armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed filed a lawsuit claiming that the boxes supplied by the prop provider “failed to state” that “the contents contained both dummy and live ammunition.”
  • February 15, 2022: Hutchins’ family files a wrongful death lawsuit, claiming that reckless behavior and cost-cutting by Baldwin and producers led to Hutchins’ death.
  • April 20, 2022: The New Mexico Environment Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau issued a “willful” citation against Rust Movie Productions, including a $136,793 penalty, for “failures that led to Hutchins’ avoidable death.”
  • October 5, 2022: Hutchins’ family reaches a settlement against producers. As part of the settlement, Hutchins’ husband was assigned as executive producer of the film, and it was announced the actors and director would restart filming in January 2023.
  • October 27, 2022: The Sheriff’s investigation is passed to the District Attorney, and a week later, the DA releases a nearly 600-page report on the shooting.
  • January 19, 2023: Prosecutors on the case make the announcement that Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed will each be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Because of Baldwin’s principal role in the production of the film, his culpability remains high for Hutchins’ death. Although Baldwin has affirmed his innocence over and over and regards it as a “horrible tragedy,” he faces an uphill battle in court.
