Venice is Graveyard of Grounded Gondolas and Furious Tourists as Canals Run Dry

A severe drought in Venice is having a ripple effect across the area, with canals running dry.

Pictures of the city show grounded water taxis and low-lying gondolas perched at the bottom of nearly-dry canals.

It’s a new and frustrating problem for residents, as they’re usually dealing with floods and the ongoing concern of the city sinking into the water.

Tourists caught in the city’s dry spell are furious, demanding refunds on social media after their idyllic trip to one of the world’s most wondrous cities has turned into a massive disappointment.

The lack of water has crippled a city that relies on canals for commute, even making it impossible for emergency services to access those in need.

The dry canals are a result of a combination of a full moon, unusually low tides, and drought conditions across Italy.
