US Secretary of Treasury Makes Surprise Trip to Ukraine to Deliver Massive Aid Package Amid Corruption Scandal

US Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen made a surprise visit to Kiev on Monday.

Yellen’s visit was part of a reveal that the US will be sending Ukraine another massive aid package to the tune of $1.25B. Visiting a school that US funds helped rebuild after Russian shelling, Yellen explained, “Our funds help pay for emergency personnel: from firefighters who answer the call when missiles strike to medical professionals who treat sick and wounded civilians.”

Yellen also talked about efforts to seize $300 billion in Russian bank assets that were frozen by sanctions. There are plans to transfer these funds to Ukraine to help bolster the country’s struggling economy. She added, “Just as security assistance bolsters the front lines, I believe that this economic assistance is fortifying the home front, thereby strengthening Ukraine’s resistance.”

Yellen’s surprise visit is the second from US officials in a week, with President Joe Biden making an unannounced trip to the besieged country just last week.

But it’s not just the aid package making news this week. Dozens of top Ukrainian officials have been said to have resigned in recent weeks after they were accused of corruption, taking bribes and using money to buy luxury items for themselves even as other countries scrape together funds to help their quest for liberation.

Corruption among high-ranking officials in the Ukrainian government isn’t a new revelation, but the country is facing renewed scrutiny as the world pours money into their efforts.
