Uber Fined $14M for Lying to Lure Customers Away from Cabs

Australia’s Federal Court has just struck a blow against rideshare company Uber.

The company will now have to pay $14 million because it engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct.

According to the court, Uber misbehaved in two ways, lying to customers to lure them away from traditional cabs.

Additionally, the court covered misconduct over how Uber handled fees when customers canceled a ride they had already booked.

Between 2017 and 2021, customers who canceled a booked ride received a message warning that they may be charged a cancellation fee. But during that period- Uber had promised cancellation would be free.

Over two million customers received the messages, and the court found that it pressured them into riding rather than paying a fee for a service they hadn’t used.
