TikTok CEO Testifies Before Congress, ‘4 Commitments’ to User Safety

TikTok CEO Shou Chew is testifying before a congressional hearing on his company’s safety record in the US.

The CEO emphasized that there are 150 million Americans who use the app – half of the population of the country.

And he committed to 4 separate things to ensure safety for users:

  1. “We will keep safety, particularly for teenagers, as a top priority for us.”
  2. “We will firewall protect the US data from unwanted foreign access.”
  3. “TikTok will remain a place for free expression and will not be manipulated by any government.”
  4. “We will be transparent, and we will give access to third-party independent monitors to remain accountable for our commitments.”

Chew added, “Our commitment is to move the data into the United States.”

Although TikTok has been blasted by a number of government officials for national security and user data safety concerns, the promise the company made on Capitol Hill goes further than other tech companies have been willing to do – and could help shape what happens to the company next.
