Things to Know About the Biden Top Secret Documents

The world’s sense of cosmic irony is on full display this week after news broke that President Biden has been improperly storing classified documents in at least two locations.

This comes after a fevered investigation into the improper handling of documents stored in the private residence of former President Donald Trump which culminated in a dramatic raid at his property late last year.

The news cycle is changing from minute to minute, so it can be hard to keep up with. Here are the top things to know about the Biden docs:

  • In 2017, Biden worked at the Penn Biden Center, a nonprofit think thank in Washington run by the University of Pennsylvania.
  • November 2022: Attorneys working for the President discovered a “small number” of classified documents stored in Biden’s Penn Biden Center office. They alerted the National Archives, turned over the documents, and cooperated with both the Archives and the Department of Justice.
  • An investigation was launched shortly after to determine whether classified info was mishandled
  • December 2022: The president’s personal counsel tells the DOJ that there are more documents in the president’s private library, which is attached to his garage at his home in Wilmington.
  • January 2023: Investigators brief Attorney General Merrick Garland and recommend he appoint a special counsel.
  • January 12 2023: Biden’s personal attorneys tells the DOJ that they found a document with a “classified” moniker among the documents at Biden’s private residence. Hours later, Garland appoints a special counsel to investigate.

There are a few key differences between the Biden docs and the Trump docs, so far. It appears as though Biden’s counsel and the President himself have been cooperating and facilitating investigators in looking for documents. Very few of the documents found have contained highly sensitive material. In comparison, Trump’s team has lied about documents, refused to turn some over, and many of the documents were highly classified and sensitive.

For the first time in American history, both a current and former President are under investigating for mishandling classified information – and the people are the ones who lose.
