Tesla Bursts into Flames on Highway 50 Near Sacramento

Sacramento Metro Fire responded to a massive blaze on Highway 50 near Rancho Cordova.

The blaze occurred when a Tesla Model S battery combusted while driving highway speeds. It required 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish and two fire engines.

Metro Fire of Sacramento tweeted about the incident, explaining that “the vehicle battery compartment spontaneously caught fire while it was traveling freeway speeds on EB Hwy 50. The fire was extinguished with approx 6,000 gallons of water, as the battery cells continued to combust. Thankfully no injuries were reported.”

The blaze comes amid renewed criticism of the dangers (and extreme combustibility) of lithium batteries, which power EV cars like the Tesla Model S and others.
