RIP MALLS

Tampa’s ‘Dead Mall’ Still Takes Deep Breaths of Nostalgic Life

The shopping mall era may be coming to a close with the advent of online shopping, but one Tampa mall is getting a breath of new life.

Tampa’s University Mall is perfect for those seeking a glimpse into the past and a walk through the halls of nostalgia.

With more than 80 tenants operating in the building, it’s far from dead.

But it’s also a far cry from the bustling heyday of the ’90s that it once enjoyed.

With familiar sights, smells and experiences, University Mall is exactly the blend between the past and the present that nostalgia-seekers cherish.

Nearly a decade ago, New York-based RD Management began scooping up the mall in parcels and promised to bring renewal to the building, including apartments, research facilities, clinics, offices, entertainment, and indoor walkability – a desirable commodity in a southern state getting hotter every year.

But as the transformation happens in fits and starts around University Mall, the core marches on. And to that core, ’90s kids bring their little ones to pass on the love of shopping mall nostalgia.
