Sunny Balwani, Partner to Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes, Sentenced to 13 Years

Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani was once the president and COO of the infamous start-up Theranos.

Founded by Elizabeth Holmes, Theranos famously promised blood test technology and results that they could not deliver. The company was once valued at a staggering $9B but quickly fell once the curtain was peeled away.

Now, Balwani is facing 13 years in prison after a judge handed him his fate this week.

Balwani was convicted earlier this year of 12 counts of wire fraud. Balwani was also convicted of defrauding patients who used the technology, available for a brief time at drugstores across the country.

The former COO’s attorney, Jeffrey Coopersmith, said in a statement, “We are disappointed with the outcome. We respectfully disagree and plan to appeal.”
