Pay-to-Play Blue Check Marks: Twitter Plans to Start Charging $20/Month for Verified Accounts

Once upon a time, proving who you are was enough to get that vaunted blue check mark on your Twitter account. You could pay for more, but it wasn’t required.

But under new bossman Elon Musk, things will be changing soon.

Musk just issued his first ultimatum to employees, asking them to introduce paid verification or get the fuck out.

What Musk wants is to turn Twitter Blue, an optional $4.99/month subscription that unlocks additional features, into a more expensive mandatory subscription process that verifies users.

Musk wants it to cost $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue.

Under the new plan, verified users have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue check.

Employees working on the project say they have until November 7 to put up the new subscription plan, or be fired.

Between this move and planning to fire 3/4 of Twitter’s workforce to make it harder to upkeep and moderate content, it almost seems like Musk doesn’t want anyone on his new platform.
