Officials Say Women in Iran Breaking Hijab Laws Will Be Caught by Facial Recognition Software

If you’re looking to protest draconian hijab laws in Iran, it just became a whole lot more complicated.

A top official says that facial recognition software can identify women who remove their hijabs in protest.

The proposal to use the software came back in September – before state police murdered Mahsa Amini and sparked months of turbulent protests in the streets of Iran.

And now, officials may be stepping up their efforts to use the software to nab protesters.

Mahsa Alimardani, a researcher of freedom of expression in Iran at the University of Oxford, has recently heard reports of women in Iran who received citations in the mail for violating hijab laws – despite having no interaction with law enforcement officials.

The Iranian government has reportedly been spending years working on beefing up their digital surveillance system, and it may now be working on quelling protests.
