NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Will Sign Multiyear Contract Extension Next Week

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter has reported that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL owners are expected to sign a multi-year contract extension at next week’s owners meetings in Phoenix.

Goodell’s extension has been in the works since last year.

It’s unclear exactly what the final numbers will be on the contract, but it’s likely that they’ll be full of incentives. Goodell has presided over a wildly successful NFL, with teams seeing their value skyrocketing. He also oversaw a collective bargaining system that has brought continued labor peace, plus new multi-million dollar media rights deals with CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN and Amazon.

Goodell also oversaw the NFL’s tenure during COVID-19, managing to find a way for the league to play its full slate of games and compensate players at 100%.

However, Goodell has also overseen an NFL battling controversies like the revelation that concussions are causing serious long-term brain damage in players, and the league’s handling of player discipline.

A NYT report in 2020 revealed that Goodell makes $63.9M a year, and has earned around $500M since becoming commissioner in 2006. That’s more than any NFL player in history has made.
