Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo Gives First State-of-the-State Address: “the Best Politics is No Politics”

Taking the podium in Carson City, Nevada, Monday night, newly elected Governor Joe Lombardo, noticeably nervous, gave his first state-of-the-state address. The freshman politician stumbled over his words many times.

After giving a nod to former Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, Lombardo turned out a fiscally conservative education heavy, speech, promising to save the state’s budget surplus for a rainy day and to pump $2 billion dollars into schools.

“The pandemic created a budget surplus … today, the government has more money than we can spend … but we must not overspend.” Lombardo promised to reserve $1 for every dollar spent and not to use one penny to fund “reoccurring programs.”

He also said he will suspend the state motor vehicle tax to combat inflation.

“The best politics is no politics,” … he expressed when it comes to education. Lombardo also laid out a plan to tighten accountability standards after the promise of the needed funds are delivered. He made note that he will advocate to expel problem students and increase security standards—but no word on whether teachers will be allowed to be armed as the former sheriff once insinuated.

In one valiant moment, Lombardo called himself a lifetime crime fighter. “I will introduce legislation that makes it harder, not easier, to commit a crime in the state of Nevada.” He then went on to say he wanted to strengthen drug penalties to reduce crime especially when it comes to the fentanyl epidemic.

“Incarceration should be the last resort,” he proclaimed while offering budgetary support for mental health services, suggesting turning over part of the Las Vegas jail to be turned into a forensic hospital.

If all that seemed well and good, he then unveiled plans for sweeping voter reform, saying that all mail in ballots should be received by the times polls close on election day and that not everyone should receive a mail in ballot — so Nevada can’t “draw out its results.”

Lombardo also announced he’s giving state employees a hefty raise and improving working conditions.

As a closer, Lombardo went for the star power … noting he is going to “return Nevada to a pro-business, pro-development state,” and that he will be joining Elon Musk and the Tesla team on Tuesday to announce plans to open a plant in Northern Nevada. The soap opera continues as the Twitter king meets the lifetime crime fighter.

Then, F1 head Stefano Domenicali popped out of nowhere and received a shoutout and acknowledgment from the new governor, who clearly enjoys well-buttered toast and will have great seats to November’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.
