Mitch McConnell Votes Against Protection for Interracial Marriage, Then Goes Home to his Asian American Wife

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is perhaps not the most perceptive person on the planet.

This revelation comes after the Republicans voted against a bill in the Senate that would codify the right to interracial marriage, as well as gay marriage.

Of course, one could argue that McConnell’s beef is not with interracial marriage but gay marriage – and you’d probably be right.

But it’s the perfect metaphor for “cut off your nose to spite your face” or perhaps “shoot yourself in the foot.”

Because, of course, Mitch McConnell is as white as white comes – and his wife is not.

McConnell is married to the successful and high-profile professional Elaine Chao, an Asian American woman who served as former US Secretary for Transportation (the first woman of Asian heritage to do so).

Or maybe everyone is barking up the wrong tree, and McConnell knows exactly what he voted against. There are, of course, easier ways to get a divorce.

The bill McConnell voted against (along with 36 other Republicans) is called the Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA). Despite his bizarre “no” vote, it passed anyway with a bipartisan vote in the Senate of 62-37, with 12 Republicans crossing the aisle to vote in favor.
