Meta Threatens to Pull All News from Facebook Amid Looming Publisher Pay Bill

Meta is threatening to pull all news from Facebook in the United States if a bill they call “ill-considered” passes.

The bill, known as the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, would force Meta and other platforms to compensate publishers and broadcasters.

On Monday, Meta issued a warning through Andy Stone (Meta’s policy-communications director) stating that if Congress passes the “ill-considered journalism bill,” the company “will be forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether.”

The bill right now has bipartisan support and would allow publishers to negotiate with social media platforms like Facebook and Google over how their content is distributed on the platforms.

This would also require the platforms to pay for news content.

Meta explained, “The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act fails to recognize the key fact: publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves because it benefits their bottom line – not the other way round.” The company added, “No company should be forced to pay for content other users don’t want to see, and that’s not a meaningful source of revenue.”
