Meta Employees Banned From Discussing Gun Rights, Abortion, Vaccines and More

According to a new update to Meta’s “community engagement expectations,” employees are banned from certain hot-button topics.

The new rules ban staff from discussing things like abortion, gun rights, and vaccines. Also included are political issues (including civil movements and elections).

The company says that the topics being banned are those which have been deemed “very disruptive in the past.”

Lori Goler, Meta’s head of people, wrote in an internal forum that the new rules are effective immediately.

Goler wrote, per a report from Fortune, “We’re doing this to ensure that internal discussions remain respectful, productive, and allow us to focus. This comes with the trade-off that we’ll no longer allow for every type of expression at work, but we think this is the right thing to do for the long-term health of our internal community.”

Employees exempt from the topics, of course, include those who have to address the topics as part of their jobs at Meta. And external communications, including posts on social media, are exempt from the rules.
