A new viral video shows the moment when a man and a bear come face to face in the most unexpected way.

David Oppenheimer of Asheville, North Carolina, was just enjoying his patio and lounging in the shade.

A bear was just strolling through a yard, enjoying the scenery. Apparently, he was returning to the yard in search of a “bear-proof” bird feeder that Oppenheimer keeps around.

And the video captures the moment when they see each other. Oppenheimer hears a motion sensor alarm and turns, catching sight of the bear first (bear, what happened to your sniffer?) and jumps, startling the bear.

Oppenheimer shared the video on social media with the caption, “Chillaxing at the end of the day, didn’t expect to make eye contact so close.” He later told US TV, “I looked behind me and didn’t see anything. But about a minute later, the bear came along and was practically in front of me.”

Now that’s a bearably close encounter.
