Lizzo Plays 200-year-old Crystal Flute and Twerks on Stage

Lizzo is the queen of all things sparkly, and this week she took her reign to historic heights.

It all started when Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden tweeted an invitation to Lizzo to tour the Library of Congress ahead of her Washington DC concert this week.

After a brief tour of the Library of Congress, a stunned Lizzo was handed a 200-year-old crystal flute that once belonged to James Madison and was invited to play it in front of a screaming audience.

Lizzo, an accomplished flute player, was tickled at the opportunity and played a few haunting notes before adding in her signature twerk. The crowd went wild, and Lizzo’s face lit up as she geeked out over the piece of musical history she held in her hands.

She told the audience, “Bitch, I just twerked and played James Madison’s crystal flute from the 1800s! We made history!”

Critics had harsh words for her, accusing her of mishandling a piece of history and stepping outside her authority to play the notes (even though the librarian herself handed it to the performer).

Yes, it is was weird to see twerking and “historic flute” in the same headline.

But Lizzo’s going to twerk, so no one should be surprised.
