Legendary Footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic Announces Retirement After 22-Year-Career

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has announced his retirement from football at the age of 41.

The Swedish superstar’s contract expires at the end of June, so a special ceremony honoring him took place following AC Milan’s game on Sunday.

“The time has arrived to say goodbye to football, but not to you,” an emotional Ibrahimovic said in his post-game address to fans.

He was in his second stint with AC Milan, but had also suited up for Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, Ajax, and Paris Saint-Germain, among other teams.

“So many memories and emotions inside this stadium,” Ibrahimović said. “The first time I arrived you gave me happiness, the second time you gave me love.”

“I want to thank my family and those close to me for their patience. I want to thank my second family. The players, the coach and his staff for the responsibility they gave me.”

“Last but not least, from my heart, I want to thank you, fans.”

Ibrahimovic was a part of league titles in four different countries and scored over 500 goals in club play during his career. He also starred for Sweden internationally, scoring 62 goals in 122 appearances.

Happy retirement to a legend!
