Lawmaker Proposes ‘Boston Hijab Day’ in Honor of Mahsa Amini

Fernandez Anderson is a Democratic member of the Boston City Council, representing District 7.

She is also the first Muslim to serve on the Boston city council.

But instead of making headlines for the good firsts she’s achieving, she’s proposed a head-scratcher of an event.

Anderson called for Boston to declare Mahsa Amini’s birthday “Boston Hijab Day,” according to conservative outlets which reported on the outrage.

Remember, #MahsaAmini was murdered by Iranian morality police for violating the country’s restrictive religious dress code. Amini was not wearing a hijab. Protests against the brutal state murder have included women burning their hijabs and cutting their hair in solidarity with the murdered 22-year-old.

According to Anderson, the day could mark “women’s right to self-expression.”

The backlash online was swift and brutal, with many calling the resolution “shocking,” “inappropriate,” and “tone-deaf.”
